The importance of thinking

Thinking is an important mental process. It helps us to define and organise experiences, plan, learn, reflect and create. Our thoughts are the single most important physical item in determining our destiny. How we think will dictate how we feel and how we react to situations in life. Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do or what to believe. It includes the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinkingIndependent thinking is the process of making sense of the world based on your own observations and experiences rather than depending on the word of others. It is the ability to trust your own judgements, even if they are not in agreement with what others might say or believe.

At The Discovery School, we are committed to ensuring that our children will develop to be confident, critical and independent thinkers. We believe this to be crucial if we are to enable them to be truly successful later in life. This belief runs throughout our curriculum, which encourages children to question and challenge what they see or hear, and also has led to the creation of the weekly 'Big Question'.

With the Big Question, we are asking the children to think each week about some aspect of the world (or universe!) that they may never have before considered. They will sometimes question their morals, values and behaviours and will sometimes seek to deepen their understanding of their place in the world around them. We'll be providing time in the classroom for the children to share their thoughts and ideas. You might want to ask them what they think when they are at home - they may surprise you! There are no rewards or prizes; just the development of confident, critical and independent thinkers.

All of the Big Questions will be listed here on this page. What do you think?!
