Welcome to Darwin Class!

Darwin class is a year 1 class taught by Mrs Coldwell and Mrs Scott. We are situated in the KS1 end of the school opposite Goodall Class. The children access the classroom in the morning via the main entrance, through the playground and in through the outside door.

Year 1 promotes independence, responsibility and hard work - as well as lots of fun!!! Our aim is for the children to deepen their knowledge and understanding in a relaxed, exciting and engaging environment where we set them up to become enthusiastic, lifelong learners.

Being in Year 1 signals the start of national curriculum where the children will be taught Maths, English and Phonics daily. Over the course of the year we teach Geography, History, Art, Design Technology and Computing through our themed topics and Science, PE, RE, Music and PSHE every week.

Darwin Class is named after the explorer Charles Darwin.

General Information

Reading books are changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday, therefore it is essential that your child’s yellow reading record book AND reading books are in school on these days. Please record in your child's yellow book that they have read even if it is just with a smiley face or a tick besides the date as we will be celebrating the children who have read every day on a Friday and will display their photos on the classroom door.  Please use these books to communicate with us at any point and do let us know if you feel your child is finding the books too easy/difficult so we can make any necessary changes.

Big Maths will take place every Friday so please continue encouraging this at home.

Darwin class have PE twice a week. We have one session inside and one outside every week and PE days do often change around therefore it is essential that ALL children have the correct kit in school at all times.

Inside PE kit consists of a red t-shirt, blue shorts and plimsolls.

Outside PE kit consists of a blue tracksuit (jogging bottoms and a jumper) socks and trainers. Earrings need to be taped up for health and safety reasons.

Without the correct PE kit, children will be unable to take part.

Term 4 Photos

We made baskets out of clay for Little Red Riding Hood to carry her fruit to Granny's house.

We made brains and labelled what would make a growth and fixed mindset.

We created a 'Doubling rap' in Maths to help us to remember our doubles to 10.

During India week we tasted Indian food and made Raki bracelets to give to our friends.

We made Animations using Lego Movie Maker. The children created their own backgrounds and moulded characters out of plasticine. Then they filmed a stop motion animation.
